Uzbekistan: for the first time a representative of the country in the UN Human Rights Committee

Between 2025 and 2028 Uzbekistan will have a representative at the United Nations Human Rights Committee for the first time in its history, the academic and activist Akmal Saidov. This was reported by the "Dunyo" website, according to which the election took place at the Glass Palace on the occasion of the 40th session of the States Parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Competing for the Committee's nine seats were representatives of 16 countries, including Burundi, Georgia, Egypt, India, Spain, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Lithuania, Morocco, Paraguay, South Korea, North Macedonia, Togo, Uzbekistan, Croatia, Ethiopia and South Africa. Before Saidov's election, the entire Central Asian region had never had a representative on the Human Rights Committee, a body that meets three times a year for four-week sessions (in spring in New York, in summer and autumn in Geneva).

The experts are responsible for monitoring the implementation among the States Parties of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Uzbekistan joined in 1995. According to the Uzbek press, the UN has thus recognized "the significant progress made" by Tashkent on the international scene, thanks in particular to the reforms promoted by the president Shavkat Mirziyoyev against forced and child labor, against domestic violence, for the promotion of the rights of women and girls, for gender equality, for improving the conditions of vulnerable populations, for maintaining an open dialogue with relevant agencies of the United Nations. Saidov, 65, is currently director of the National Center for Human Rights and first vice-president of the Oliy Majlis, the legislative chamber of the Uzbek parliament.
