Uzbekistan and the Organization of Islamic cooperation (OIC) are constantly developing cooperation in various fields, including in the field of human rights. This was once again confirmed in a letter received by the National Center for Human Rights of Uzbekistan. The letter is written by Marghoob Saleem Butt, Executive Director of the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission.
The National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) of Uzbekistan and the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission have established close partnership. Especially, with the support of the NCHR, the 6th International Seminar of the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission was held in Tashkent on October 7-8, 2019, which resulted in the adoption of the Tashkent Declaration on the Rights of Youth in the OIC Member States.
In early November 2019, the NCHR represented Uzbekistan during the discussion of the draft OIC Declaration on Human Rights. It was held at the third meeting of the intergovernmental Working Group of Experts in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia).
Strengthening the established partnership and exchange of experience, the National Center for Human Rights sent an invitation to Marghoob Saleem Butt to become a member of the Editorial Board of the journal “Democratization and Human Rights”, which is a periodical of the NCHR.
Together with this proposal, a report “New Uzbekistan and Human Rights: Uzbekistan’s progress towards compliance with international obligations on human rights” was sent to the Executive Director of the OIC IPHRC.
In a response letter, Marghoob Saleem Butt stated that he would share the report with all Commission Members of IPHRC, and also offered to “provide a printed version of the report to the OIC Member States during the next session of the Commission, which is expected to hold as soon as Pandemic related restrictions are lifted”.
Marghoob Saleem Butt stressed that it was an honor for him to “contribute to the Uzbek Journal on human rights and to concur with the proposal and would be happy to be part of its Editorial Board”.
“With your continued support and guidance, I shall also do my best to contribute both personally as well as by helping to select and secure the valuable work done by other reputed scholars on human rights issues of global concern”,- noted in the letter of the Executive Director of the OIC IPHRC.
Uzbekistan is consistently working to analyze the best international standards and practices on human rights and to comply with international obligations in this area.
As President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sh.M.Mirziyoyev noted, “Ensuring respect for human rights and freedoms, respect for the dignity of each person is an integral feature of the open, free and fair society that we are building”.
In May 2020, in the format of online conferences, the NCHR information on compliance with these obligations for the period 2018-2019 was first considered at the plenary sessions of the Legislative Chamber and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
As a result, both chambers recommended that the important data presented in the Center's information should be available to the public.
It is within this framework that this information is presented in the form of the report “New Uzbekistan and Human Rights: Uzbekistan’s progress towards compliance with international obligations on human rights” is becoming more widely represented among international organizations, an important place among which is occupied by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
